Book Review: Saved by the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund

Book Blurb:

After her annulment is finalized, Enya Shanahan finds herself caught in a web of scandal and obligation while carrying a secret that threatens to shatter her family's reputation. Sullivan O'Brien, a steamboat captain committed to aiding enslaved people on their path to freedom, is faced with an ultimatum from his father. Forced to marry or lose his livelihood, a marriage of convenience seems to be the only solution. As he and Enya face the trials of their pasts and a city consumed by fire, they must confront their deepest fears and learn to trust in love, even when darkness threatens to engulf them.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Two wounded souls, one determined Matchmaker, and a ticking timeline, can anything good come from it?

In Saved by a Matchmaker, Sullivan O'Brien has a looming deadline given to him by his father, to marry by Shoving Tuesday, or he will not be able to pilot his family's fleet of steamboats. Captaining and all it entails, including secreting runaway slaves up the Mississippi, have been his life since he returned scarred from the Mexican War. With a recent annulment from a rash marriage, Enya Shanahan is desperate to appease her family and avoid any more scandals, but she has a secret that could make things worse. With the help of a clever matchmaker and her pushy brother and father, Enya finds herself at the altar pledging her life to Captain Sullivan O'Brien just before midnight strikes. Each carries scars that make it hard for them to trust. Will Enya and Sullivan's marriage become more than a business agreement as the Matchmaker predicts, or will they fall apart?

Jody Hedlund spins a moving tale of a marriage of convenience meets a matchmaker's uncanny ability to find a lasting match. Jody is one of my go-to authors. Her stories always draw me in with rich details and well-flushed-out characters. Enya and Sullivan's story is no different. I connect with their brokenness and desire to be seen and loved. Saved by a Matchmaker is an engaging read, brimming with heartfelt moments of faith, compassion, and the journey to self-acceptance that paves the way for love.

While you can read this book as a stand-alone book, it is most rewarding to read it after reading Calling on the Matchmaker.
