I have been keeping my college-bound crew busy making dried đ apples. They will be headed off to school in a few days, but not before they helped me transform the surplus of apples our trees gifted us into tasty Fall snacks.
These dried apples are very easy to make with just a few ingredients.
Supplies:
Apples
Lemon Juice
Ground Cinnamon
Special Tools:
Apple Corer/Slicer (*My slicer makes slices that are approximately 0.25", which is a nice thickness when dried.)
Dehydrator with temperature controls
Run the apples through the apple slicer/corer. Once they have been cored and sliced, cut the columns of apples down the middle from the top. It should create two piles of half circles.
Separate and place the half-circle apple slices in a large bowl and sprinkle them with lemon juice and ground cinnamon. Stir with a spoon until the apples slices are evenly coated. *The lemon juice gives just a bit of tartness to the apples, especially some of the sweeter varieties.
Layer the slices on the dehydrator trays and place them in the dehydrator.
Once all the trays are filled and loaded in the dehydrator, turn it to 145 degrees and let the apples dry for 5 to 6 hours. *After some experimenting, I have found that I should run mine for 5.5 hours, that is the dryness that my family likes best for their dried apples.
When the apples are dried to your satisfaction, remove them from the trays and store them in zipper bags. These treats don't last long in my house, but if we have a big apple year, we often gift bags of dried apples to friends and teachers so that more people can enjoy them.
